What are some helpful earthquake/natural disaster tips?
filed in News & Events on Feb.28, 2010
Another major earthquake struck Chile early this morning and it has a presumably rising death toll.
We all know about the unfortunate one in Haiti as well.
Though I live in the states, I live in California, and we are expected to get a big one sometime in the next couple of years.
What are some safety rules to go by to keep family and maybe even pets safe?
How do you make yourself stay calm when an 8.8 hits?
Where exactly are you supposed to go when an earthquake does hit?

Most difficult to say without sounding like an cuckoo alarmist…
Earthquakes alone don’t kill people, Nope, that debris crushing them does. So logically one should stay out of a high-rise during an earthquake.
If you’re in your house take cover outside, never in a basement.
If you happen to be shopping when an earthquake strikes, exit the building as quickly as possible. Avoid taking any shelter under trees, bridges, fallout shelters and inside your own vehicle.
good luck surviving the next big one, were all going to need it

I am not sure how anyone could be expected to be calm during an earthquake. I guess you would need to run for cover, maybe cover yourself with the mattress from your bed and take refuge in the bath tub, wait, I think that is for tornado’s. I would make sure you have plenty of pictures of your puppy and make sure your vet has photos on file, so if for some crazy reason you get separated, you can at least claim him later when someone finds him. It might be good to have him chipped so if someone does find him roaming around and they take him to a vet, they can contact you. I don’t think keeping him in a crate would be a good idea, he could get trapped. I am not sure what you would do if you were at college, I would imagine they would practice that with you all. I think your local news would tell you what the best thing to do would be if you were on the highway when it happened. Make sure your cell phone is charged, too, so you can hook up with family if you get separated. Also make sure you have safe drinking water set aside now, and maybe batteries for flash lights and things like that. Make sure you and your puppy have plenty that you can eat if the electricity goes out too. Peace be with you.
